This is the first volume in a series that deals with the planning and development of Dublin from the earliest times to the present day. The focus is on the built environment - from both geographical and historical perspectives, unravelling and explaining the processes that have interacted to produce today's city.

Anngret Simms, now retired, was professor of Geography at University College Dublin. Joseph Brady is a geographer and formerly Head of the UCD School of Geography, Planning and Environmental Policy and Dean of Arts. He is also, with Ruth McManus & Anngret Simms, a series editor of The Making of Dublin City series.
