This book presents the proceedings of a conference held at the Pontifical Irish College to honour Cardinal Desmond Connell on his eightieth birthday. The papers celebrate Cardinal Connell as philosopher, theologian and pastor. Cardinal William J. Levada, prefect for the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, reflects on the relationship between the diocesan bishop and the universal magisterium. Dr Fran O’Rourke, UCD, explores the ‘beautiful dangers of being’ within the contemporary philosophical discourse, and Dr Brendan Leahy, St Patrick’s College Maynooth, proposes the triune God as a response to Europe’s contemporary cry. These are presented together with responses from Michael Paul Gallagher SJ and Professor Linda Zagzebski. Other essays are also included treating a wide selection themes of interest to Cardinal Connell including a reflection on the brokenness of the Irish church, a meditation on the spirituality of study, priesthood in the writings of Benedict XVI, and overviews of contemporary christology and trinitarian theology.
